While marketed as suitable for both stepped and level thresholds, these standard channel drains fall short in effectively managing water drainage, especially for modern door systems with weep holes.

Claims suggesting the suitability of standard channel drains for flush level access requirements are misleading and fail to acknowledge the complexities of drainage needs in relation to building structure. Understanding the limitations of standard drains and opting for specialised dual-flow drainage systems like Aqualevel is crucial for effective water management and preventing structural damage.

Limitations of Standard Channel Drains

Standard channel drains are designed primarily for stepped door thresholds, where the drain cover sits below the threshold level. However, they prove ineffective for capturing water from modern door systems equipped with weep holes intended to allow water to exit. This limitation necessitates the use of a dual-flow drain system like the Aqualevel, which effectively encapsulates the door and drain, ensuring proper drainage without compromising building integrity.

Comprehensive Water Management

The Aqualevel system not only captures water from adjacent paved surfaces but also effectively handles water exiting from door threshold weep holes. This misconception stems from the belief that a 10mm drain slot meets regulatory standards, despite its inefficacy in collecting water from the door threshold itself.

Compatibility Issues and Outdated Methods

It’s essential to recognise that threshold drains are only suitable for stepped threshold details to avoid complications with DPC detailing. Outdated drainage methods intended for flush level thresholds, such as French drains or slot drains, are incompatible with modern metal door profiles and weep hole drainage systems, leading to potential failure.
